520 _aThis study aimed to find mercury-resistant bacteria which can be used as pollution indicators by cytochemical staining. Three mercury resistant bacterial isolates (A, B and C) were obtained from a ballmill dumpsite at Apokon, Tagum City. Isolates A and C were identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens while isolate B was identified as Pseudomonas putida. The isolates were grown in nutrient agar media containing varied concentrations of mercury (10, 15 and 20 ppm HgNO3). After three days, it was found that the number of bacteria that survived decreased with increasing HgNO3 concentration. However, as the end of the incubation period was reached, the number of bacteria increased. It was also observed that when bacteria have accumulated mercury, the surface of their colonies turned blue. The results indicate that the isolates possess some mechanisms of detoxifying the mercury-containing environment
