Material type: TextLanguage: English Publication details: 2005Description: 51 leavesSubject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (BS Biology) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2005 Summary: The reforestation initiatives in Sanipaan Shoal a tidal flat of 45 ha, found in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao Gulf was studied. A mangrove forest, dominated by Sonneratia alba, was observed in the 1970?s which disappeared in 1978 due to cutting of mangroves for various uses. Consequently, a marked reduction of these resources was observed. Reforestation initiatives started only in 1991 covering an area of 3 ha. Among the sectors involved are Department of Environmental and Natural Resources XI, Local Government of Samal (DENR-LGU), Coastal Environmental Conservationists of Samal Island (CECSI), Davao Gulf Marine Rehabilitation Foundation (DGMRF), Department of Agriculture (DA), Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), Rotary Club of Davao City (RCDC), and Rotary Club of Waling Waling Davao City (RCWWDC). A 5% survival of mangroves was observed at the end of the study period (February 2005). Most successful growths are found at the west of the sand bar with the tallest plant reaching 230 cm in height and 160 cm in width. In the experiment to eliminate sea grass stress, no significant difference in growth was observed between the fenced and unfenced seedlings. Seasonal changes were factors in the success of replanting such that the southwest monsoon brings lesser rainfall and least occurrences of algae. Other factors to be considered are topography, signs of probable success and presence of pestsItem type | Current library | Collection | Call number | Status | Date due | Barcode |
