Thesis (BA Communication Arts) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, May 2016
This qualitative exploratory research is about the single women's interpretation of love and romance portrayals in the soap opera. On the wings of love (OTWOL). This research aimed to identify specific scenes in OTWOL that portrays love and romance, to describe how love and romance are portrayed in OTWOL, to discover why single women watch OTWOL, and to discover and describe how single women react to the portrayals of love and romance in OTWOL though the conduct of a series of focus group discussion with eight (8) single female students in UP Mindanao. The results from the conducted FGD were analyzed using Stuart Hall?s Encoding/Decoding Model of Communication. On the Wings of Love has the same theme with other typical Filipino soap operas that are centered on the story of love, however, unlike those soap operas, OTWOL has a different treatment when it comes to its plot, characters, and the situations that the characters go through. Based on the analysis, the majority of the single women's interpretation of OTWOL's portrayals of love and romance are in negotiated position ? they recognized what was portrayed in OTWOL, but presented their own take about it. In general, the single women watch On the Wings of Love for entertainment, escapism of problems and gratification of romantic desires.
