Thesis, Undergraduate (B.S. Agribusiness Economics)-University of Philippines, Mindanao
The Davao Region is the region with the highest durian production in the Philippines. However, the Philippines is not competitive in the market due to low production volume compared to other countries. All actors in the durian supply chain must coordinate in order to raise their production and become more effective as a whole. This study aims to examine a durian supply chain in Davao City to know the factors affecting its performance. Specifically, this study was conducted to probe the inefficiencies which are hindering the actors in the durian supply chain in Calinan, Davao City. Supply Chain Mapping and the Rapid Appraisal method were used to trace the supply chain of durian in Calinan and to evaluate the performance of each supply chain actor. Technical Efficiency Analysis, was applied to assess the general production practices of durian farmers in Calinan. Based on the results, a lack of government planning, low wage, and the disadvantage in the global market were considered as the external factors negatively affecting the supply chain. It was determined that the actors in the supply chain are the plant growers, farmers, traders, processors, retailers, and consumers. Each actor has various inefficiencies such as lack of technology, management problems, and improper production practices. The technical efficiency analysis revealed that on the average, durian farmers in Calinan are not technically efficient. Coordination among all supply chain actors was recommended to improve the performance of the Calinan durian supply chain.
