Thesis (BS Architecture) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2013
The Catholic Church is among the oldest institutions in the world and has played a prominent role in the history of Western civilization. It teaches that it is the one true church founded by Jesus Christ, that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles and that the Pope is the successor to Saint Pater. Catholic worship is centered on the Eucharist in which the Church teaches bread and wine is supernaturally transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ. These beliefs reflect in the construction of the places of worship. These churches were affected by certain aspects and conditions which caused it to evolve through time. The research provides information on the evolution of the churches of Roman Catholicism in Davao City, Philippines. By carefully evaluating the factors that affected these changes, the growth and development of these churches is determined. This research also provides information about the architectural character of the Roman Catholic churches in the city and the different Roman Catholic practices which affected church construction. The research envisions a place where people of different walks of life can share a common understanding about the city's Roman Catholic religion and its architecture.
