Summary, etc. | A rapid survey of the frog and toad species in Mount Pig-ulahingan and Mount Malamabo, Marilog Forest Reserve, Davao City was conducted on April 14 and 18 and May 6 to 7, 2002. A modified transect method was employed in the collection of frogs and toads in two sites. Using the Shannon-Wiener Index. Mount Pig-ulahingan had higher species diversity index (2.252) compared with Mount Malambo (1.96). The species Philautus acutirostris Peters had the most number of individuals and that the Philautus group was the most dominant among other genera in both sites. Forest fragmentation is the major threat to the frogs and toads in Marilog Forest Reserve due to slash-and-burn farming practices and logging activities. Amphibians, as good biological indicators of the health of the environment should be monitored periodically. They are particularly sensitive to habitat fragmentation because they often show strong site fidelity and many have limited dispersal capabilities |
